Herman Cain dominates Denver straw poll

It appears as if Herman Cain may be gaining momentum. He has tried to make himself relevant again during this race. Maybe admitting he was wrong and apologizing last week to Muslim leaders has made him appear less insane. Just maybe, by then again...

Herman Cain easily won the Western Conservative Summit presidential straw poll Sunday, drawing 246 ballots out of 508 cast and beating his nearest runner-up by a 179-vote margin.

Second-place contender Rick Perry took 67 votes, or 13 percent, to Cain's 48 percent. In third place was Rick Santorum with 50 ballots, or just under 10 percent, followed by Mitt Romney with 49 ballots and Michele Bachmann with 44.

Cain, Santorum and Perry all addressed the Colorado gathering. Cain got the Sunday speaking slot closest to the straw poll. Santorum and Perry both spoke Friday.

It's always hard to know exactly what to make of straw poll results. The standings tend to favor candidates who actually show up, and Cain had the advantage of prime placement in the program. But at the very least, his performance suggests that there's more enthusiasm for his campaign in certain sectors of the grassroots than there seems to be in national polls.
