Flooding comes on the hill of the massive tornado that hit the South

The Shoals escaped heavy rain that soaked middle Tennessee during the weekend, but could not escape the flooding it spawned. Shoal Creek began spilling over its banks late Sunday and was flooding homes along its shore in Lauderdale County before sunrise Monday.  Significant injuries were not reported, but there were anxious moments for people living in the flooded areas along Shoal Creek.

The Florence-Lauderdale County Emergency Management Agency's search and rescue team used a boat to evacuate some creekside residents trapped in their homes by the rapidly rising water.  National Weather Service officials said 2.56 inches of rain was recorded at the Northwest Alabama Regional Airport in Muscle Shoals on Sunday — a record for the date. The previous rainfall record for May 2 was 2.31 inches, which was set in 1964.  Local rainfall combined with heavier rainfall in Lawrence County, Tenn., was more than Shoal Creek could handle. More than 8 inches of rain fell upstream in Lawrenceburg during the weekend.
