Gabrielle Giffords honors Mark Kelly in D.C.

This is such a miracle that we are witnessing. I am so happy that she is able to travel. This was a major ceremony to honor her husband's years of service. One bright light is shining in Washington today.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords pinned a medal onto her husband Mark Kelly’s jacket Thursday afternoon at a ceremony marking his retirement from the Navy after more than two decades of service.

In Washington for the second time since suffering a gunshot wound to the head in January, Giffords smiled as she honored Kelly, a NASA astronaut who commanded the Endeavour shuttle this spring.

“It’s not every day you encounter examples of sheer courage and selflessness and dedication like you see with this couple,” Vice President Joe Biden said as he led the retirement ceremony at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, the Houston Chronicle reported. Press coverage of the event was limited to the White House pool and a few news organizations with connections to Giffords, an Arizona Democrat who is recovering at her husband’s Houston home.
