Newt Gingrich charms crowd from back of the pack

It is easy to look good when you have been looking bad for so long. I knew that the sound bites that would get the most play, would be the ones bashing the President. Newt and no one else on that stage could remotely be serious about being President of this country.

Newt Gingrich still knows how to charm an audience.

Though the former House speaker was just as far from the top of the polls going into Monday night as he has been for months, he seemed to be enjoying himself — and the loud reception he was getting at the debate hosted by CNN and Tea Party Express in Florida. Going beyond the media critic he played at the last two debates, Gingrich landed some of the main applause lines from the start, when he refused to pick sides in the fight between Mitt Romney and Rick Perry over the future of Social Security.

“I’m not particularly worried about Governor Perry or Governor Romney frightening the American people when President Obama scares them every single day,” he said.

As the prolonged applause and whoops continued, Gingrich smiled, joking, “This is eating into my time.”
