Michele Bachmann has hedged about whether Iowa is a "must-win" state, as her former campaign manager Ed Rollins called it, but in a new strategy video, her current top adviser acknowledges that the caucuses are make or break for her.

As POLITICO's Reid Epstein reports:

Nahigian goes on to say that Bachmann plans to focus her post-Iowa efforts on South Carolina rather than New Hampshire.

“We are going to compete in New Hampshire and not dominate our effort like we are in Iowa,” he said. “If she wins in Iowa, does well in New Hampshire, wins South Carolina, she is basically on a very clear path to win the nomination.”

The Iowa-or-bust admission, presumed about the campaign since Bachmann began to fade after her Ames straw poll victory, is a slight turn from what Bachmann herself said Monday on WHO radio in Des Moines. Then, asked directly by host Simon Conway if she had to win Iowa for her campaign to survive, she said, “not necessarily, we might go on.”
