House shoots down spending bill

It appears as if Speaker Boehner was caught off guard. He underestimated not only the Democrats, but his own party. It appears that we may be headed to a government shutdown after all. Here we go again....

A stopgap spending bill to keep the government funded past Sept. 30 was upended in the House late Wednesday when Democrats pulled back their support in protest of cuts made to offset disaster aid in the package.

Only last week, the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, Rep. Norman Dicks (D-Wash.), had backed the same bill but then reversed himself Wednesday under pressure from his caucus, creating a more partisan battleground.

Caught off guard, Speaker John Boehner desperately sought to crack the whip in his own party, where he continues to battle a rump bloc of conservatives upset with the spending levels he helped negotiate with President Barack Obama. But 48 Republicans still broke ranks, dooming the package on a 230-195 vote.
