I was beginning to wonder, even if things get worked out, will the season still start on time? Will there be a shortened pre-season? The players have to mentally and physically prepare for the season. I hope they are working out as much as they can to be in football ready shape.
How much time is enough time for NFL teams to get ready for the first regular-season game?
If that's not the $9-billion question right now, it soon could be. With each passing day of the nearly 4-month-old lockout, teams' preparedness becomes an increasingly crucial part of the lockout equation.
On June 6, the Lions met at Birmingham Detroit Country Day for their second round of player-organized workouts. At that time, receiver Nate Burleson said he wasn't ready to say he missed formal coaching.
"But a month from now, I'll probably answer that question differently," Burleson said almost exactly a month ago.
"At some point we're going to need to start running some plays and getting refreshed in the playbook. Now we can do that without the coaches, but obviously it'd be easier if we had the staff here."
A lot happens in an NFL off-season. Players are added and subtracted and dense playbooks are adjusted accordingly. It's a lot for any player to digest.
One popular notion is that players need about three weeks to get ready for a game. But Burleson said that is not realistic because it doesn't factor in recovery time.
