Michelle Obama Inspires at Spelman Commencement

I am moved and touched everytime I hear Mrs. Obama speak. What she says inspires me to want to do more, to be more. She also shows how to be married and not lose yourself in your mate. An awesome task all alone.

First Lady Michelle Obama stood before a crowd of 10,000 Sunday at the Georgia International Conference Center and challenged graduates of Spelman College to follow their mantra: Change the world.

“There is a presumption of brilliance,” Obama said. “Every woman enrolled here has something infinitely unique to offer the world.”

The first lady encouraged the graduates and students to reach back and pull others up as they progress.

"Find those folks who have so much potential but so little opportunity, and do for them what Spelman has done for you," Obama said. "No matter where you go in the world, you will find folks who have been discounted or dismissed, but who have every bit as much promise as you have. They just haven't had the chance to fulfill it. It is your obligation to bring Spelman to those folks. Be as ambitious for them as Spelman has been for you."

For the 550 graduates of the historically black, all-female college in the Atlanta University Center, the appearance by one of the most powerful women in the world was special.

They lobbied online and through letters for the wife of the nation’s first African-American president to speak at the 124th commencement of the college, which was founded by two white women from the North who wanted to educate black women. In her speech, Obama applauded Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles, who had the vision to start with a small elementary school and grow it into an institution of higher learning.

Today, the institution boasts a high rate of graduates and professional school acceptance for its alums and a consistence employment placement. Also, a large percentage of its graduates — 20 percent – have majors in math, science, computer science or related fields.

Obama is delivering commencement addresses at four schools this season.

In addition to speaking at Spelman, she spoke recently spoke at the University of Northern Iowa. She also will address the U.S. Military Academy graduates at West Point and the graduating class at Quantico Middle High School at Quantico Marine Base in Virginia.
