There must be a recording device in my home. Just the other day I was having a conversation with my husband about the apparent 'real' relationship between the First and Second Ladies. I don't know anywhere in my recent history of these two positions ever being so close. I went back to the early 80s. I don't recall any joint ventures with Nancy and Barbara for 8 years; Barbara and Dan Quayle's wife(don't even know her name). Or Hillary and Tipper for 8 years or Laura and Dick Cheney's wife(another name I can't recall) for 8 years. But even before the election was final, I knew these two ladies by name and what they would take positions on.
On Monday’s episode of “The View,” Michelle Obama showed the audience that when it comes to hitting the campaign trail for her husband, she's pumped up and ready to go. After host Sherri Shepherd asked if she had any trepidation about the reelection campaign, Obama confidently rolled up the sleeves of her beige sweater and declared, “Roadtrip. Jill’s driving. Jill and Michelle in a bus.”
The first lady and Dr. Biden made a lengthy appearance on the talk show to discuss their newly launched military family support initiative called “Joining Forces.” But before talk turned to the troops, the pair happily chatted about their friendship.
Host Barbara Walters said, “It’s very rare to have the first lady and the vice president’s wife together. Sometimes they didn’t even get along that well. Tell us about your relationship.”
With her large green earrings swishing, Obama said, “Jill is very cool.” She said the positive connection between their two families was “pretty instant" and gave the Biden clan props for being “real people." “She’s funny so she puts up with my silliness,” said Obama of the second lady. Another similarity, host Joy Behar pointed out, is that the two women both exercise often. Obama explained that she sometimes does two-a-days at the gym because she doesn’t get to walk outside much due to security.
When the conversation eventually turned to military families, Obama said, “Most Americans are probably like I was, not really recognizing the sacrifices and challenges that these families make.” Said the first lady, “This campaign is about taking the camouflage off and making sure that our country knows that they’re there.”
