Unusual Radiation Readings Reported at Port of L.A.

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- Small traces of radiation have been detected in the U.S., and that may include the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro.

A marine clerk reported unusual activity in the radiation readings on containers that arrived over the weekend from Japan. That clerk did not want to be identified.

Truck drivers picking up shipments say they're worried that no precautions have been put in place.

"They should consider our safety to because, I mean, we're taking the goods in and out of here, and it's like we're the last guy on the pole, so to speak," truck driver David Camacho told KTLA. "It shouldn't be that way."

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials insist there is no reason for alarm. They say they are simply taking extra precautions, and have implemented radiation detection technology at ports of entry since 9/11.

In a statement, the agency says it will, "continue to evaluate the potential risks posed by radiation and contamination and will adjust its detection and response protocols as developments warrant."
