This is so sad. I hope there is not too much retaliation. The President will definitely take his time before he makes any decisions.
President Barack Obama said on Sunday he’s “deeply saddened” by the killing of at least 16 Afghan civilians, including several children, and supports a full investigation “to get the facts as quickly as possible and to hold accountable anyone responsible.”
He also called Afghan President Hamid Karzai to extend his condolences, the White House said.
One U.S. service member already has been arrested in the incident.
“I offer my condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives and to the people of Afghanistan, who have endured too much violence and suffering,” the president said in a statement. “This incident is tragic and shocking and does not represent the exceptional character of our military.”
Nonetheless, the shooting in the southern part of Afghanistan is sure to raise questions about Obama’s plan for withdrawal, which is premised on trust and cooperation between Afghan and U.S. troops. And Defense Secretary Leon Panetta moved quickly with his own statement and assurances to Karzai.
The “tragic incident does not reflect the commitment of the U.S. military to protect the Afghan people and help build a strong and stable Afghanistan,” Panetta said. “I spoke to President Karzai to offer my deepest condolences and profound regret for the tragic incident.”
