NY-26 candidates sprint to finish

This race is probably going to go down to the wire. If Kathy Hochul, the Democrat pulls this off, this will be a huge upset. I am sure this will take all night to tally up the votes.

Jane Corwin slipped off her shoes Sunday afternoon as she made calls from the phone bank at her campaign headquarters. The Republican’s feet have blistered as she’s stepped up her campaigning in the homestretch of an unexpectedly competitive special House race.

Democrat Kathy Hochul was confident ahead of what she increasingly expects will be her upset. When a high school volunteer told her she cannot cast a ballot on Tuesday because she’s only 17, Hochul told the girl she’ll be old enough to vote for her reelection next November.

Voters here told both Corwin and Hochul throughout the weekend that they’re overwhelmed by the endless phone calls, the negative TV ads and flyers. The House race has attracted millions of dollars in outside spending because Democrats have turned the vote into a proxy war over the future of Medicare.

“This is won on the ground,” Hochul told a group of staffers who work for House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) as they returned to her office from a long day of canvassing. “The air game is over. Basically, there’s too much information now. And I’ve made one promise in this campaign, and that is on Tuesday at 9 o’clock the ads will end.”

Corwin’s campaign said it knocked on 18,000 doors in New York’s sprawling 26th District this weekend. By Sunday evening, they were on track to make more than 58,000 weekend calls.
