Gingrich Shifts to Damage Control.

Here we go again. A politician opens mouth and inserts foot. Unfortunately, Newt is notorious for this type of behavior. He has the tough job of trying to convince people that he is not man he used to be but that he is the same man. Oh well!!!!

White House hopeful Newt Gingrich was in damage control mode this morning, posting a video on his website in which he declares he is “completely opposed to the Obamacare mandate on individuals.” This comes after an appearance Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” where he explained why he supports a requirement that everyone have insurance.

In his TV appearance, and in a subsequent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Gingrich explained that his version of a mandate could be designed in a way that would be acceptable to libertarians—for instance, people could agree to post a bond that would pay for unexpected health care costs if they don’t want insurance. He said he didn’t like the design passed into law last year, but said that it is important that everyone have insurance. “I think we have to find a way to hold people accountable for paying for their health care,” he said. He told the Journal that the rules should apply to all Americans, but suggested they could be designed by the states.

He didn’t get into any of these subtleties in his web video.

“I am completely opposed to the Obamacare mandate on individuals,” he said. “ I fought it for two and half years at the Center for Health Transformation. You can see all the things we did to stop it at HealthTransformation.net. I am for the repeal of Obamacare and I am against any effort to impose a federal mandate on anyone because it is fundamentally wrong and I believe unconstitutional.”
