Was the judge wrong in this case? I pose the question because the woman's statements were not... she was just conveying what has be instilled in her through mainstream media. What are your thoughts?
Although jury duty is considered an obligation and not a choice, there are endless tales of people using every excuse under the sun to avoid serving. One woman's antics were so offensive to a Brooklyn judge that she's now required sit in the jury pool for an indefinite period of time.
Judge Nicholas Garaufis sentenced an Asian woman from Brooklyn identified as 'Juror No. 799' to extra jury duty for her racist remarks on her juror questionnaire. When asked to list three people she admired the least she mentioned "African-Americans, Hispanics and Haitians" because in her opinion "you always hear about them in the news doing something."
Please keep in mind this is not a little old lady who's age can provide some type of generational excuse for her comments. This woman was in her 20s, works in the garment industry and claims to have a relative who was a gang member of the Chinese Ghost Shadows and is in jail serving time for murder.
But she didn't just spew hate on minorities, she threw a little shade on the NYPD too, claiming they were lazy and used their sirens to bypass traffic jams.
"This is an outrage, and so are you," the Brooklyn Federal Court judge told her.
The woman was up for jury duty in the death penalty trial of Bonanno crime boss Vincent "Vinny Gorgeous" Basciano and was taken off the case, but Judge Garfaufis says the juror is definitely not free and clear.
"She's coming back [today], Thursday and Friday -- and until the future, when I am ready to dismiss her," Garaufis said.
The moral of this story is "you reap what you sow." If she was lying, she certainly learned her lesson. But if she was just being a racist, then she gets no sympathy.
