BET CEO to Advise Obama

BET Networks Chair and CEO Debra Lee is one of 10 members selected to serve on President Obama's new management advisory board.

The board will advise the administration on how to implement best business practices on matters related to management and operation, and how to improve relationships between private businesses and the federal government.

Lee will join Greg Brown, president and CEO of Motorola; Sam Gilliland, chairman and CEO of Sabre Holdings; Jeffrey Kindler, chairman and CEO of Pfizer; Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the American Red Cross; Shantanu Narayen, president and CEO of Adobe; Enrique Salem, president and CEO of Symantec; Elizabeth A. Smith, CEO of OSI Restaurant Partners; Tim Solso, chairman and CEO of Cummins; and Ronald A. Williams, chairman of Aetna on the board.

Lee joined BET in 1986 as VP and general counsel and was named chief operating officer in 1996. She became chairman and CEO in 2005.

Whether you wake up to Bobby Jones Gospel and DVR The Game, or think BET is responsible for all that is wrong in black America, Lee's appointment should be evaluated apart from her network's programming. She is a seasoned and savvy businesswoman, and the board will benefit from her breadth of experience and perspective.
