Five things not to do on airplanes

These are some very good tips. I have seen some people do some of these on the plane. I have often asked myself, what is wrong with these people? Where is the book on etiquette for flying? I think I am going to print these out on a little card and hand them out the next time I fly.

Every time you get on an airplane, it's a crap shoot. No, I'm not talking about safety but rather the person you'll be sitting next to. All walks of life end up flying at one point or another. Maybe you're stuck sitting next to someone who doesn't quite understand that his actions impact others around him. Or maybe YOU are that person.

For that reason, I thought it would be fun to go through the top five things you really shouldn't do on an airplane.

1. No bare feet -- It should go without saying that being cooped up on an airplane with others mere inches from you is painful enough with everyone clothed. Just because it's a long flight does not mean you can get as comfortable as you get at home. Sure, go ahead and kick your shoes off, but you better be wearing socks. And if your feet smell, put those shoes right back on to make sure that you contain the stink. This one applies in all classes. I was in business class on a flight last year where the seats were angled out. Sure enough, a guy across the way put his bare feet right up there for all to see (and smell) as they walked down the aisle. Don't do it.

This man is a lunatic. He has three degrees, count them BA, MBA, and JD. If education is so bad, why did he keep going to college? We are falling behind our global competitors in education. The President knows that the best way to compete is through education. Who uses the language 'remake in his own image'? This is utter nonsense. So now he is placing the President on the same level as God? Really??? The only place I can recall such language is in the Bible. Just saying.....

Speaking to a tea party group in Michigan on Saturday, former senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) accused President Obama of being a “snob” because he wants “everybody in America to go to college.”

The statement is a curious one considering that Santorum — who holds a B.A., M.B.A. and J.D. — holds more advanced degrees than Obama, who has a B.A. and a J.D.

And Talking Points Memo reported Saturday that in 2006, Santorum’s campaign Web site stated his commitment to making “higher education more accessible and affordable.”

“Not all folks are gifted in the same way,” Santorum told a crowd of more than 1,000 activists at the Americans for Prosperity forum in Troy, Mich. “Some people have incredible gifts with their hands. Some people have incredible gifts and ... want to work out there making things. President Obama once said he wants everybody in America to go to college. What a snob.”

I was surprised at some of the comments from the students. There seems to be such a disconnect from history and the necessary reasons for the laws that are in place. I wish we did not need the 'safety net' of Affirmative Action, but we do. If it is disallowed in one area, then it will have an impact on other areas like construction jobs, coaching jobs, gender issues and the like. This could be major. Let's pay close attention to this issue.

These are some tips to try. I think the next time I wake up tired, which will probably be in the morning, I am going to try a couple of these. I am going to see if they will have an impact on my activity level throughout the day. I will let you know how it turns out.

No matter how dedicated you are to getting your shut-eye, sometimes a less-than-stellar night's sleep is inevitable. The good news: "One bad night's sleep isn't going to hurt you long term," says Joyce Walsleben, Ph.D., coauthor of "A Woman's Guide to Sleep."

But it can make you feel not so great the next day. Luckily, there are ways to feel normal (or very close!) after a rocky night's rest.

1. Open your shades

A big dose of sunshine is the first thing you'll want to try. "Natural light resets your body clock, helping you function better all day," Walsleben says. "Even the low light on a cloudy or rainy day wakes you up better than any indoor bulb."

Early-morning sunlight is best for helping you start the day feeling rejuvenated. To perk up fast, open your shades as soon as you get up.

Bill Maher pledges $1 million to Obama

Wow! I really didn't see this coming. If you haven't heard, Bill Maher pledges $1 million to Obama super PAC. Apparently, Maher made the announcement Thursday during a performance of his "Crazy Stupid Politics" show in San Jose, Calif., aired on Yahoo!'s new live comedy Web channel.

"I would like to announce tonight a donation to the Obama super PAC, which has the very unfortunate tongue-twister name Priorities USA Action," Maher said. "I know, it was named by Borat ... but tonight I would like to give that PAC 1 million dollars."

After the show, he tweeted to his 1 million Twitter followers, "Most important advice I ever got in show business, as true today as then: always bring ur wallet onstage."

Lawsuit claims Obama can't be president because he's 'mulatto'

What in the world is going on? This is why we must continue to fight. At what point does this person think that this is ok? I have never in all of my life seen such nastiness toward the President of the United States. Is this person just trying to make a name for himself? We must fight for justice on all levels. He needs to be sued for filing a frivolous lawsuit.

If we thought President Obama silenced all the birthers by releasing his long form birth certificate last year, think again. Apparently, some folks still have doubts and are taking it one step further: to court.

Tuesday, Gordon Warren Epperly filed a lawsuit in Alaska challenging President Obama's inclusion on the 2012 presidential ballot. What's Epperly's beef? Apparently, he feels Negroes and mulattoes can't be president because they aren't really citizens.

His lawsuit states:

I agree with you Eugene, going to war is not an option. They need to stop trying to make up a crisis to scare people. The good news is that hopefully enough sane people realize what they are up to and will not give them a chance to start another unnecessary war

We’ve heard this quickening drumbeat before. Last time, it led to the tragic invasion and occupation of Iraq. This time, if we let the drummers provoke us into war with Iran, the consequences will likely be far worse.

Rat-ta-tat-tat. Weapons of mass destruction. Boom-shakka-boom. A madman in charge. Thump-thump-thump. Mushroom clouds.

Tune out the anxiety-inducing percussion and think for a minute. Yes, there are good reasons to be concerned about the Iranian nuclear program. But it doesn’t follow that launching a military attack — or providing support for an attack by Israel — would necessarily be effective, let alone wise. The evidence suggests it would be neither.

Michael Jordan suing Chinese company for unauthorized use of name

I say good for Michael Jordan. He has to protect his name. Businesses cannot continue to prosper off of the backs of other people. Jordan worked hard for his name, much like Tina Turner did. His name alone is worth millions and he should fight for it.

Former NBA star and current Bobcats owner Michael Jordan filed suit in a Chinese court against Qiaodan Sports Company Limited, a sportswear and footwear manufacturer, for unauthorized use of his name.

In a statement released through his spokeswoman, Jordan says he's worked hard to establish his name and calls the issue "deeply disappointing to see a company build a business off my Chinese name without my permission, use the number 23 and even attempt to use the names of my children."

Jordan says he's "This complaint is not about money, it's about principle and protecting my name."

The Chinese company has registered and uses the name "Qiaodan" -- the moniker Jordan has been known by in China since he gained widespread popularity in the mid-1980s.

I don't know if I completely agree with Jonathan on this one. For me, the difference is you cannot look at someone and know for sure that they are gay. However, you can look at me and know that I am an African American female. So because of that, if I am discriminated against I know for sure it is because of my race or my gender. Based on that alone, I think the two issues are somewhat separate. Having said that, I don't think a person should be mistreated, bullied or discriminated against because of their sexual orientation. The truth of the matter is I don't believe it is any of my business.

Obama Administration Proposes Cut in Corporate Tax Rate

I have not read the plan in its entirety, but what I am heat so far, makes sense to me. But of course, I believe in taking care of the 'least of these'not just talking about it. I hope the President will get to implement this plan.

Saying that "the current tax code was written for a different economy in a different era. It needs to be reformed and modernized," Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner just outlined a proposal from the Obama administration to cut corporate taxes while also eliminating business loopholes.

The proposal, which is posted online here, would reduce the top corporate tax rate from its current 35 percent to 28 percent — and offer incentives that could reduce some businesses' rate to 25 percent if they engage in "advanced manufacturing" in the U.S.

I did not watch the debate, but I heard enough of the recap to know what happened. There were a lot of attacks against President Obama. Alot of lies being told. Romney and Santorum seem to forget that they are on the same team. Gingrich and Paul were their usual selves: condescending, pompous and talking crazy talk.

Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum tore into each other’s records on government spending, health care, abortion rights and more on Wednesday night, quickly turning the crucial Arizona primary debate into a flurry of charges and counter-charges that reflected the bitter tone of the GOP race.

The two leading Republican candidates squabbled in a petulant, personal fashion on the stage here, with Romney opening the attack on Santorum as an inveterate pork-barrel spender.

The cross fire continued throughout the nearly two-hour debate, doing only a little to clarify the GOP primary but bloodying both candidates — and doing more damage to Santorum, who was most frequently on the defensive.

“You voted for the Bridge to Nowhere,” Romney jabbed at Santorum early on. “When I was fighting to save the Olympics, you were fighting to save the Bridge to Nowhere.”

President Obama at the Ground Breaking Ceremony for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture

This was a very good program. Laura Bush looked great. All of the speakers spoke to the heart and soul of why this museum is needed. I am glad that I got to witness this historic ground breaking ceremony. I cannot wait until this project is complete. I will definitely let my husband know that we are going to plan to be there opening day if possible.

This morning, President Obama was on hand for the ground breaking at the site of the future Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

He told those assembled on the National Mall:

Just like the Air and Space Museum challenges us to set our sights higher, or the Natural History Museum encourages us to look closer, or the Holocaust Museum calls us to fight persecution wherever we find it, this museum should inspire us as well. It should stand as proof that the most important things in life rarely come quickly or easily. It should remind us that although we have yet to reach the mountaintop, we cannot stop climbing.

This is awesome news. I hope it will also have nightly news. That is the one thing missing from cable is a nightly news program that caters to the African American audience. I love Roland Martin on Washington Watch. Maybe he can give them some pointers.

Retired NBA player and business mogul Earvin "Magic" Johnson has partnered with Comcast to launch his own cable network targeted at African-Americans. Johnson's "inspirational-themed" channel, Aspire, is expected to air within the next year, and is just one of an expected ten minority-targeted networks to be developed over the next decade.

There is also talks of Diddy launching a music service called Revolt as part of the same deal (although Comcast won't confirm a commitment to either channel.) The planned networks emerge out of Comcast's contract with NBCUniversal that allowed it to assume control as of 2011, under the condition that it follow through on expanding its minority outreach.

This is getting real serious. First they decide they are going to rule on the Affordable Health Care Act, now they are looking at Affirmative Action as it relates to college entrance. Virginia governor no longer fully supports ultrasounds before abortions

Of course he is backing down because the people of Virginia are standing up to this nonsense. If a woman has made up her mind to have an abortion, listening to an ultrasound is not going to change her mind. This is a pretty costly procedure, probably more than the cost of the abortion. Who pays for it, the patient? Since it is not a medical need for the procedure, then insurance will deny the claim and the patient is stuck with paying for something that she did not want or need. Wow!!!

Gov. Robert F. McDonnell is backing off his unconditional support for a bill requiring women to have an ultrasound before an abortion, focusing new attention on one of the most controversial pieces of legislation in Virginia’s General Assembly this year.

Until this weekend, McDonnell (R) and his aides had said the governor would sign the measure if it made it to his desk. McDonnell, who strongly opposes abortion, will no longer make that commitment.

But delegates and governor’s staff were scheduled to meet Tuesday night to strike a compromise after learning that some ultrasounds could be more invasive than first thought, according to two officials who were aware of the meeting but not authorized to speak about it publicly. Many of the bill’s supporters were apparently unaware of how invasive the procedure could be, one of the officials added.

She may have meant to say 'radical environmental policies' that time, but it only confirms to me that she thinks the President has 'radical Islamic policies'. I don't think these people have realized that we have figured out the code language they are using and we are not going to let them get away with it. Every one is hyper sensitive these days, and with the constant news programs and internet, we can separate what is being said from what is meant.

Rick Santorum's spokeswoman Alice Stewart said in a TV interview on Monday that Santorum was referring to President Barack Obama’s “radical Islamic policies” when he said the president’s agenda was driven by “phony theology” — but then quickly called up MSNBC after the segment aired to say she misspoke.

“There is a type of theological secularism when it comes to the global warmists in this country. That’s what he was referring to. He was referring to the president’s policies in terms of the radical Islamic policies the president has,” Stewart said on “Andrea Mitchell Reports.”

Mitchell later said on the air that Stewart phoned the show after the interview to say she had slipped up and said “radical Islamic policies” instead of Obama’s “radical environmental policies.”

As we approach the Oscars next week, I must reflect on the history on the award. In the 84 years of the Oscars, there has only been 13 African American winners. Of that 13, only one female has one in the Best Actress category and that is Halle Berry. A role I did not particularly care for.

Here is the list of the 12 winners. I want you to take a look at the length of time between them. Here are a couple of examples. It was 51 years between Hattie McDaniel and Whoopi Goldberg. It was 39 years between Sidney Poitier and Denzel Washington.

At another time, we will discuss the times they were nominated and did not win. The first one that comes to mind is Denzel Washington for Malcolm X. He was robbed that year. The second one that comes to mind is Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne for What's Love Got to Do With It? Robbed!!!

Whitney reaches her final resting place

Wow,
I am not sure where to start. The services on Saturday for Whitney Houston were truly amazing. I am so glad that Ms. Cissy Houston stood her ground and gave her daughter the send off that she felt that she deserved.

Some will say that the family tried too hard to convince us of Whitney's faith. I say that we, the people, did not give them a choice. We, the people, began to say all manner of things against Whitney. We, the people, felt like we could say anything about Whitney and it was ok.

Well, the family had the last word on this one. They decided that we, the people, would not get to define Whitney in her death. Ms. Cissy Houston took the world to church on Saturday with some of the best singing and preaching. So many people witnessed something that they had never seen before and will probably never see again.

Some people even questioned the list of singers and speakers that were there. Holding R. Kelly hostage to his past and Tyler Perry to his character Madea. Some said that Stevie did not sound good. Stevie has been singing at funerals and memorials for the last month; first Etta James, then Don Cornelius and then Whitney. I am also sure that Stevie is beginning to look at his own immortality.

On Sunday, the family took the final leg of this journey. They laid Whitney to rest next to her father.

Of course this journey ended too soon. Whitney left us way too soon. I pray that Bobbi Kristina finds the strength she needs to make it through this difficult time. I pray that God surrounds her with angels to keep her safe from herself and from others.

I pray that we all find the strength to come to terms with our past and to let it go.

I love you Whitney and I will miss you. Your music was the soundtrack to my life. I wonder who will guide me through the rest of my life in song...

Despite Paul Vote Pickup, Romney's Maine Win Holds

So Romney, inks out another win. I wonder how the Paul camp is feeling now. It seems like Romney is in the fight for his life for the nomination. It is like watching a guy/girl flirt with someone who obviously has no interest in them. Yet, they keep throwing themselves out. It is hard to watch but you keep watching just to see how low they will go to get noticed. I wonder how low will Romney go to win over the GOP?

Ron Paul has gained 83 votes on Mitt Romney following a Republican presidential caucus in eastern Maine, where voting last week had been postponed due to bad weather. Romney still holds a 156-vote lead over Paul in statewide totals.

Paul received 163 votes in Saturday's Washington County caucus, where Republicans from more than two dozen towns gathered to cast their votes. Romney received 80 votes. Rick Santorum got 57 votes and Newt Gingrich received four votes.

The Maine Republican Party last week declared Romney the winner of the state's GOP caucuses, but Washington County Republicans were angered their votes weren't counted after their caucus was postponed last Saturday because of a snowstorm.

Federal agents arrest Amine El Khalifi; he allegedly planned to bomb Capitol

This is a huge story. Our federal agents have been busy over the last couple of years. They have increased their ability of becoming a 'trojan horse'.

Federal authorities on Friday arrested a 29-year-old Moroccan man in an alleged plot to carry out a suicide bombing at the U.S. Capitol, the latest in a series of terrorism-related arrests resulting from undercover sting operations.

For more than a year, Amine El Khalifi, of Alexandria, considered attacking targets including a synagogue, an Alexandria building with military offices and a Washington restaurant frequented by military officials, authorities said. When arrested a few blocks from the Capitol around lunchtime on Friday, he was carrying what he believed to be a loaded automatic weapon and a suicide vest ready for detonation.

The gun and vest were provided not by al-Qaeda, as Khalifi had been told, but by undercover FBI agents who rendered them inoperable, authorities said.

They said Khalifi had been the subject of a lengthy investigation and never posed a threat to the public. On Friday afternoon, he made an initial court appearance in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, where he was charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction against federal property. He faces life in prison if convicted.

Nick Cannon steps down from radio show

I hope Nick takes this time to get well. He has a lot more to live for now with his kids and wife now. Sometimes, we try too hard to prove something to ourselves and others and it is not worth it. Nick listen to your doctor and your body and take a break. This will all be here when you get well.

After a health scare in January, and another last week, involving blood clots in his lungs, Nick Cannon is easing up on his hectic schedule.

The "America's Got Talent" host (whose credits also include actor, DJ, radio personality and rapper) announced that he's stepping down from his post as host of the "Rollin' with Nick Cannon" show on New York's 92.3 radio station. Friday is his last day.

"A bitter sweet morning. I have to stop my radio show. Doctors orders," Cannon posted to his Twitter account Friday morning. "The Doctors found blood clots in my lungs and said if I don't slow down and stop working so hard then it's a wrap!"

Cannon said last month that he planned to slow down after he was hospitalized shortly after the New Year and treated for a "mild kidney failure."

When he returned to work two weeks following his health scare, he explained "mild kidney failure" meant that his kidneys weren't functioning properly, but that he was "back and feeling 100 percent."

I am so glad that this debate was cancelled. I am not real sure what else these candidates can say to convince their base that they can beat President Obama. A lot of the rhetoric that they speak is quite irritating to me because it is full of lies. These candidates are running scared on real issues and making up issues to scare people. I am ready for the debates with President Obama, so we can tell who has real leadership skills.

The Republican presidential candidates are finally drawing a line on debates.

Mitt Romney, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum decided to skip the March 1 debate that was to be co-hosted by CNN and the Georgia and Ohio state Republican parties, their campaigns confirmed Thursday.

CNN decided to cancel the debate after being left with a single confirmation, Newt Gingrich, who would have been left to square off solo with moderator John King. Gingrich’s camp is unlikely to be happy with the turn of events as the former House speaker has used the nationally televised spectacles to savage the media and twice revive his lagging campaign.

Oregon Public Broadcasting spokeswoman Carol Howard confirmed to POLITICO that the network and its partners still intend to go ahead with a GOP debate scheduled for March 19 in Portland, Ore. OPB will co-host that debate with PBS, NPR and The Washington Times.

Provocateur comedian Stephen Colbert is known for many things. Silence has not been among them — until now. An abrupt suspension in his Colbert Report's production schedule sparked rumors online Thursday, after Comedy Central said it would air reruns for three days this week.

It seems the delay is due to a family emergency. The Wall Street Journal reports that Colbert "suspended production of his satirical comedy show temporarily because of an emergency in Mr. Colbert's family, according to people familiar with the show."

Earlier Thursday, many in the media struggled to interpret an email from Comedy Central spokesman Steve Albani, which stated, "Due to unforeseen circumstances, the show will air repeat episodes on Wednesday, February 15 and Thursday, February 16."

This is great news. So why is it being hidden in the news? This President is working hard to get people back to work and to improve this economy. Unfortunately, he is not getting the respect that he deserves.

The number of people seeking unemployment benefits in the U.S. fell to the lowest point in almost four years last week, the latest signal that the job market is steadily improving.

Weekly applications for unemployment benefits dropped 13,000 to a seasonally adjusted 348,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. It was the fourth drop in five weeks and the fewest number of claims since March 2008 -- six months before Lehman Brothers collapsed and only a few months into the Great Recession.

The four-week average, which smooths out fluctuations in the weekly data, fell for the fifth straight week to 365,250. The average has fallen nearly 13 percent in the past year.

The consistent decline indicates that companies are laying off fewer workers, and hiring is likely picking up further. When applications drop below 375,000, it usually signals that hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate.

Jeremy Lawson, a senior economist at BNP Paribas, said the report points to solid hiring this month, similar to the average net gain of about 200,000 in the past three months.

Legalizing drugs won't prevent abuse

I agree that legalizing drugs won't stop or prevent abuse. Alcohol is legal and that has not stopped people from drinking themselves into comas, drunken stupors or liver failure. One of the main problems in my opinion, is the failure of the prescribing physician to perform due diligence. Before a new prescription is written from a new doctor or even the same doctor, there should be a blood test. This test would determine what is in a person's system already. If someone is found to have elevated levels, then additional steps should be taken. The problem is that doctors are herding their patients in and out like cattle. They are not as concerned about the total needs of the patient, just the ones that the patient is talking about. This has to stop. Their oath says to do no harm, but when they are laxed in their duties, they do lots of harm.

On the evening of Whitney Houston's death, renowned recording artist Tony Bennett told the audience of Clive Davis' Beverly Hills party, "First it was Michael Jackson, then it was Amy Winehouse, and now, the magnificent Whitney Houston. I'd like to have every gentleman and lady in this room commit themselves to get our government to legalize drugs -- so they'll have to get it through a doctor, not to some gangsters who just sell it under the table."

Bennett's idiotic comments were followed closely by the often original, but in this case mistaken, Arianna Huffington.

Wow!!! Is Mars being a responsible company concerned about its consumers? This is awesome news. A candy company that actually cars about its consumers. This is music to my ears since I absolutely love Snickers. I must admit that even I thought the King size was just a bit too much. In this case, smaller is better!!!

Ready to say goodbye to a sliver of your Snickers? And how about a slightly slimmer Mars bar? By the end of 2013, chocolate-maker Mars says all of its chocolate bars will be under — or right at — the 250-calorie mark.

The 2-ounce Snickers currently sold in our NPR vending machine has 280 calories, and with the downsize it will lose about 11 percent of its size. The fun-size and the king-size bars currently range from 70 to 540 calories, which means the new 250-calorie limit spells the end of the king-size bar.

The company tells The Salt it will be replaced with bags of two or four smaller bars. The idea is to "enable sharing or saving a portion for later," according to a Mars spokesperson.

With all the fixation on our civilization's expanding waistlines, it's not that there are bad foods, just big foods. That means you won't be seeing lower-calorie chocolate or caramel — just less of it.

When Jeremy Lin hit the three-pointer with half a second left on the clock to beat the Toronto Raptors Tuesday night, you could almost hear the collective sound of NBA coaches and general managers smacking their foreheads once again.

As basketball fans by now, the New York Knicks phenom who has scored more points in his first five starts than any player since the NBA merger—and shocked the basketball world into a state of Linsanity—was an undrafted Harvard economics major with no scholarship offers to play Division 1 basketball. He wasn’t even in rotation two weeks ago for the Knicks, and now he may singlehandedly save this NBA season from complete irrelevance.

Marvin Winans to eulogize Whitney Houston in NJ

I think this is a great choice. The Winans and the Houstons have been family friends for years. For Cissy Houston to choose someone in the Gospel world and not the secular world, speaks volumes to her faith. She wants it to be known without a doubt that regardless of what we think we know, Whitney was strong in her faith and was secure in her relationship with God.

Whitney Houston's funeral will be held Saturday in the church where she first showcased her singing talents as a child, her family choosing to remember her in a private service rather than in a large event at an arena.

The owner of the Whigham Funeral Home said Tuesday that the funeral will be held at noon at Newark's New Hope Baptist Church, which seats up to 1,500. Gospel singer Marvin Winans has been chosen to give the eulogy, his son said.

The family said no public memorial service is planned at this time. Officials had discussed the possibility of holding a memorial at the Prudential Center, a major sports and entertainment venue that can seat about 18,000 people, but the funeral home said it had been ruled out.

You're almost sure the Knicks' season, suddenly inflated with hope, will go pop once Melo returns and Jeremy Lin, an underdog all his life, bends over backward to appease the A-list scorer.

And your hunch, whether it turns out right or wrong, does have a degree of merit.

Melo works best when he's with the ball, isolating on his man, pumping jumpers while everyone else tends to stand and watch. This is how it was in Denver and through 23 games this season with the Knicks. This has earned him millions of dollars, a run of All-Star Games, a spot on the Olympic team ... and zero championships.

Now, the entire dynamic of the Knicks just changed in a flash, all because of the improbable rise of Lin, a D-Leaguer who grabbed the basketball world by the throat the last few days. Lin needs the ball to set up his drive to the hoop and his teammates for shots. The Knicks are undefeated ever since the basketball gods dropped a smart point guard in the middle of Manhattan, as Melo watched from the bench in street clothes, hoping to return this week from injury.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, in a statement to The Huffington Post, weighed in heavily against a toughly-worded measure being considered in the Senate that would greatly restrict women's access to critical health care services.

"Let's be clear about what's at stake," said Carney. "The proposal being considered in the Senate applies to all employers -- not just religious employers. And it isn't limited to contraception. Any employer could restrict access to any service they say they object to. That is dangerous and it is wrong. Decisions about medical care should be made by a woman and her doctor, not a woman and her boss.”

Private Prison Corporation Offers Cash In Exchange For State Prisons

We should be very afraid of this proposal. How can a state guarantee that their prisons will be filled to 90% capacity? Are they going to increase their arrest rates to make it happen? Who will be most affected by this proposal?This is something we better pay close attention. This should not fall under the radar!!!

As state governments wrestle with massive budget shortfalls, a Wall Street giant is offering a solution: cash in exchange for state property. Prisons, to be exact.

Corrections Corporation of America, the nation's largest operator of for-profit prisons, has sent letters recently to 48 states offering to buy up their prisons as a remedy for "challenging corrections budgets." In exchange, the company is asking for a 20-year management contract, plus an assurance that the prison would remain at least 90 percent full, according to a copy of the letter obtained by The Huffington Post.

The move reflects a significant shift in strategy for the private prison industry, which until now has expanded by building prisons of its own or managing state-controlled prisons. It also represents an unprecedented bid for more control of state prison systems.

I cannot believe with all of the technology we have that we have not developed a system that goes across state lines. But then again, I should not be surprised. There should be a national database of registered voters. When the same name appears in the same state or a different state, there should be a red flag in the voter registration section. This would help to alleviate duplication and the potential of voter fraud. This is crazy.

Democrats and Republicans don't agree on much. But they do agree that voter registration lists across the country are a mess.

A new report by the Pew Center on the States finds that more than 1.8 million dead people are currently registered to vote. And 24 million registrations are either invalid or inaccurate.

There's little evidence that this has led to widespread voter fraud, but it has raised concerns that the system is vulnerable.

Election officials say one problem is that Americans move around a lot. And when they do, they seldom alert the local election office that they've left.

Ben Skupien, a registered voter who now lives in Northern Virginia, is pretty typical. He has moved repeatedly over the years and says he's probably registered to vote in about a half-dozen states.

"The assumption, I would think, is that they would do the courtesy of letting the other states know that if you're registered with a new state, [the old registration] would no longer apply," said Skupien.

In fact, states seldom share such information. The Pew study found that almost 3 million people are registered to vote in more than one state.

House GOP leaders announced Monday they were putting forward a "backup plan" that would extend the payroll tax cut for 10 months, while cleaving it from a similar extension of unemployment insurance benefits and what's known as the "doc fix," a measure needed to prevent dramatic cuts in Medicare reimbursements. The plan would not be offset by cuts elsewhere, the announcement said, meaning the cost of the tax cut would be added to the deficit.

The announcement, made quietly on a day Washington is digesting the president's budget proposal, is a stark reversal. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) took the floor shortly after the statement was emailed to reporters and spoke only of the budget.

"Because the president and Senate Democratic leaders have not allowed their conferees to support a responsible bipartisan agreement, today House Republicans will introduce a backup plan that would simply extend the payroll tax holiday for the remainder of the year while the conference negotiations continue regarding offsets, unemployment insurance, and the 'doc fix,'" said Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in a statement.

Smiley started the interview by cutting right to the chase and saying: "I celebrate the two of you. I'm delighted that you were nominated [for Oscars]... and yet I will admit to you. There is an ambivalence here...There is something that sticks in my craw about celebrating Hattie McDaniel so many years ago for playing a maid... here we are all these years later and I want you to win, but I'm ambivalent about what you are winning for."

Obama unveils $3.8 trillion budget

It is unfortunate that this budget will not be treated seriously. I know it is an election year, but we need to get some things done. Too many people are still hurting and we need Congress to do some work.

President Obama unveiled a $3.8 trillion budget request Monday that hikes taxes on the rich, spends new money on infrastructure and education, but does little to reform the entitlement programs that pose the biggest long-term threat to the federal budget.

"We built this budget around the idea that our country has always done best when everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share and everyone plays by the same rules," Obama said in his budget message.

But the budget forecasts a deficit for fiscal year 2012 that will top $1.3 trillion, before falling in 2013 to $901 billion, or 5.5% of gross domestic product.

The deficit projections, which have hovered near $1 trillion for each year of the Obama presidency, mean that Obama will not satisfy his 2009 promise to half the deficit by the end of his first term.

This is completely unacceptable. Where is the outcry from the CBC on this issue? Where is the critique of this education system from Dr. West? I have a 5 year old and short of breaking the law, it would be hard for me to understand his school suspending him. I hope people start making some noise about this!!!

Thousands of elementary students were suspended from public schools last year in Washington and its suburbs, some of them so young that they were learning about out-of-school discipline before they could spell or multiply.

Those sent home for their behavior included kindergartners in nearly every area school system — 94 in Prince George’s County, 74 in Fairfax County, 61 in Anne Arundel County, 50 in the D.C. school system, 38 in Prince William County and 22 in Montgomery County.

They included children who idled at home for a day or two and some who accompanied their parents to work.

They included the pre-kindergarten son of Rajuawn Thompkins, who said the boy was removed from his D.C. charter school for kicking off his shoes and crying in frustration. Thompkins had thought the boy was too young to be suspended.

I was looking forward to Sparkle coming out. But I was really forward to you, Savannah and the crew getting back together to show us how to 'Get Back to Happy'. Who will play Savannah now?

I don't know what happened today. I am not sure I want to know. But this I do know, you will be missed. Even in your darkest, I could always see a little light. Reporting from Washington— Mitt Romney won a presidential preference straw poll of party activists at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, giving him a morale boost after a trio of losses earlier in the week that suggested the Republican base was still cool to the tentative front-runner.

Romney was the choice of 38% of the 3,408 CPAC attendees who voted in the poll, and Rick Santorum finished second with 31%. Newt Gingrich won 15% and Ron Paul had 12%.

Romney, Santorum and Gingrich addressed the conference on Friday. In his speech, Romney described himself as having been a "severely conservative" governor and a Washington outsider.

Denzel Washington in 'Safe House': Why it's good when he's bad

I cannot wait to see this movie. I am a huge fan of Denzel Washington. I remember watching him on St. Elsewhere. My husband and I were suppose to go on Friday, but we could not squeeze it in. I hope I don't end up going without him, but you never know. I cannot think of one Denzel movie that I have not liked, even the ones that may not have been blockbuster hits, he always delivers. I hope this does not disappoint. He even made Frank Lucas a likable person in American Gangster. So hold on for a ride!!!

For about two decades now, Denzel Washington has been one of the most charismatic and popular A-list superstars in movies. He's been that rare movie star unblemished by scandal and broadly respected by filmmakers and audiences. For the most part, he has played a prototypical hero but lately, like in his new film Safe House for instance, he's taken on edgier, darker -- even villainous roles, and as a fan, I think it's a great thing.

We've become so accustomed to Denzel as a movie star that audiences sometimes take for granted just how incredible and groundbreaking his career has been. After a series of strong supporting turns in the 1980s, which eventually led to leading-man parts in the 1990s, Washington became the first bankable, black dramatic actor since Sidney Poitier. His success helped usher in a new generation of black male movies stars. Men like Morgan Freeman, Wesley Snipes, Will Smith and Samuel L. Jackson all owe a debt to Denzel.

Knowles' heritage is described in the ad as "African-American, Native American" and "French" as these words dissolve onto the screen, describing the "mosaic" that composes Beyoncé's skin tone. The selling point of the range is that its pigments provide coverage based on the unique undertones of one's dermis, which might logically necessitate a detailed description of the star's ancestry.

Yet by contrast, Jennifer Lopez's True Match commercial describes the Latina talent as "100% Puerto Rican." Beyoncé's depiction as multiracial in this context has led to criticism.

Popular gossip bloggers have led discussions about the perception that Beyonce's True Match commercial intentionally attempts to highlight her non-black heritage in order to distance the star from African-Americans. After L'Oreal suffered from an international backlash for lightening Beyoncé's skin in a 2008 print campaign, underscoring her non-African background in this advertisement is seen as another disavowal of the singer's black roots.

In my opinion, this is not an attack on the Catholic Church or what it teaches its members. If they do not have a problem covering prescriptions for men such as Viagra, then it should not be a problem covering birth control for women. I am sure there are some areas that medical insurance covers that I will never use. Just because it is available to you does not mean you have to use it.

In public relations, 'spin' is the term people use when they would like a topic or story covered in a specific manner, in a certain light. In the realm of politics, unfortunately, some elected officials and their mouthpieces like to apply the same tactics while masking the truth from everyone. Case in point: contraception and the Catholic Church. Before falling victim to the hype, let's get one thing clear, this issue isn't about religious freedom or the federal government; it is about the rights of women all across this country to have access to appropriate care. It is about protecting the rights of those workers at religious institutions who may not be of that faith (and have no choice but to find work there), but deserve the same health care that a woman in corporate America does. This is about the notion that some religiously affiliated hospitals and schools receive federal money and therefore cannot deny a woman a federal guarantee. Let's get one thing straight, this is real 'class warfare' from the right and this time the victims are the most vulnerable -- women from lower-income neighborhoods.

My two cents: People can say whatever in the #$%^@$# they want to about President Obama and the First Lady; Insensitive comments about slavery, welfare, and uneducated blacks are sprinkeled all over the Right Wing media outlets; And we can't forget, politicians like Rick Perry had an entire Ranch named after the "N-word". And yet, when I heard the outrage of a group's warped interpretation of Roland Martin's comment - which leads to his suspension - I said to myself, "Self" where was the outrage for all of the aforemention issues? Why didn't we hear of someone getting suspended? Then reality stuck in... and said, "you know why."

At any rate, if you haven't heard by now, here is the backstory - from your very own CNN. "CNN Wednesday suspended commentator Roland Martin over the tweets that the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has denounced as anti-gay. A CNN spokeswoman confirmed that the network issued this statement: "Roland Martin’s tweets were regrettable and offensive. Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated. We have been giving careful consideration to this matter, and Roland will not be appearing on our air for the time being." Spokesmen for TVOne and the syndicated "Tom Joyner Morning Show," where Martin also appears, did not respond to requests for comment.

Is Cornel West "Head Crab" in the bucket?

I remember a time when I use to run to the television to listen to Dr. West speak. I would make everyone around me stop talking and listen too! He had such mastery of the English Language. He would use words that most "white people" didn't understand.  He displayed unconditional love to black people. Hell, at one point, most black people I knew wanted to be Dr. West. However, something has happened to Dr. West over the last few years - At least in my eyes - he has lost his way.

I first notice Dr. West's descent in an article written on Chris Hedges's Blog:   Here is a one excerpt, "...There is the personal level,” he says. “I used to call my dear brother [Obama] every two weeks. I said a prayer on the phone for him, especially before a debate. And I never got a call back. And when I ran into him in the state Capitol in South Carolina when I was down there campaigning for him he was very kind. The first thing he told me was, ‘Brother West, I feel so bad. I haven’t called you back. You been calling me so much. You been giving me so much love, so much support and what have you.’

And I said, ‘I know you’re busy.’ But then a month and half later I would run into other people on the campaign and he’s calling them all the time. I said, wow, this is kind of strange. He doesn’t have time, even two seconds, to say thank you or I’m glad you’re pulling for me and praying for me, but he’s calling these other people. I said, this is very interesting. And then as it turns out with the inauguration I couldn’t get a ticket with my mother and my brother. I said this is very strange. We drive into the hotel and the guy who picks up my bags from the hotel has a ticket to the inauguration. My mom says, ‘That’s something that this dear brother can get a ticket and you can’t get one, honey, all the work you did for him from Iowa.’"

I talked about this on my radio show - details here:    At any rate, I thought the personal attacks by Dr. West were a little bit out of his character, but I dismissed it all together. But now, he comes out an calls Melissa Harris-Perry a "fraud."

That's right, in a "bully move," Dr. West comes out with a new personal attack against the most promising African American female in the politosphere (ok, I made that word up).    Never the less, Here is what Cornell West said, "She's become the momentary darling of liberals, but I pray for her because she's in over her head," "... She's a fake and a fraud. I was so surprised how treacherous the sister was."

Kobe Bryant: Church Assault Case

As much as we want to put our stars on a pedestal, we have to resist the temptation to do so. After all, they are human and Kobe Bryant is no exception. It turns out Kobe Bryant literally gave someone the finger during church services. Afterwards, "allegedly" Bryant "forcefully-acquired" a phone from his on-looker and possibly injured the guys wrist in the process. Of course the guy tried to take Kobe to court, but the prosecution didn't find just cause for any charges. At any rate, no pictures were found on the phone.

President Obama has done it again. Did you know that On February 3, several prestigous organizations held an Urban Economic Forum in New York to discuss policies that create private-sector jobs. Of course not, most media outlets will not focus on the positive. At any rate, this was the first of a "multi-city series designed to connect urban entrepreneurs and business owners to the local and national resources and networks they need to grow and hire, and to discuss ways to enhance their success." Moment in Black History: DC wax museum adds Harriet Tubman to collection

Harriet Tubman has always been one of my favorite people in history. There were four women that I wanted to play every year in our Black History Program at school: Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Mary McLeod Bethune and Mahalia Jackson. And yes, I said school not church. I admired their strength and tenacity and power. It was great that members of her family could be present at the unveiling.

Tubman's great-great-great-grand-nephew, Charles E.T. Ross, and Tubman's great-great-grand-niece, Valery Ross Manokey, were present at the Washington wax museum Tuesday to see the statue join a collection of historical figures.

The museum says it added the Tubman likeness in honor of Black History Month. It already has wax figures of Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and others.

Tubman was born into slavery on Maryland's Eastern Shore. After escaping in 1849, the abolitionist led countless slaves from the South to freedom along the Underground Railroad.

Artists from Madame Tussauds spend months creating each new lifelike figure, relying on photographs, historical accounts and paintings.

Calif. Decision Puts Marriage Politics In Spotlight

Between gay marriage, abortion and birth control this is turning out to be a pretty spicy presidential race. My opinion for all of these hot button topics is these are personal decisions. People believe what they believe and feel what they feel. Let the chips fall where they may!!!

The 9th Circuit Court's 2-1 decision Tuesday to strike down California's ban on same-sex marriage as unconstitutional could propel the issue to the U.S. Supreme Court.

It also promises to inject marriage politics into an election year during which states from New Jersey to Minnesota to Washington will grapple with the issue of gay citizens' right to legally marry.

The four remaining GOP presidential nominees, as well as President Obama, oppose same-sex-marriage rights. (Though the president has characterized his position as "evolving.") But the issue could push the composition of the high court — and its several aging justices — to the forefront of voters' minds.

"We'll celebrate this ruling, and then put that momentum toward important battles we're facing this year," said Elizabeth Gill, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California.

The judges found that California voters violated the rights of their fellow gay residents when they voted in 2008 to rescind same-sex-marriage rights previously upheld by that state's high court.

This is a major voctory for Santorum. He is all in Mitt's head right now. Almost like Eli Manning was on Sunday in Tom Brady's head. This is a major blow to Romney's ego I am sure. So as the song goes, the beat goes on!!! This is an exciting time for politics. The GOP has not decided who they like yet and voter turnout in down across the board. What do the numbers all mean??

Rick Santorum was poised to deal an embarrassing setback to Mitt Romney in as many as three states Tuesday night, as the former Pennsylvania senator took a strong lead in several non-binding presidential contests that could once again reorder the GOP primary race.

Santorum handily beat Romney in the Missouri primary, leading him by 30 percentage points with 99 percent of precincts reporting. In Minnesota, Santorum led Romney by 28 points, taking 45 percent to Ron Paul’s 28 percent and Romney’s 18 percent, as nearly three-quarter of precincts reported.
